California heat is killing cattle?

July 29th, 2006 by Dave

damn. it’s crazy how i haven’t heard anything about this living in San Diego and all. it’s been hotter than a monkey’s bum the last 2-3 weeks. i’m not an air conditioning kind of guy but mine’s been running constantly for the last 2 weeks.

i ran across the article on digg and thought it was a good read.

California heat kills 25,000 cattle: official

“The timing is horrendous,” he told AFP. “The price of milk is down 30 percent while feed, fuel, electricity prices are all up, and now we have these tremendous losses. It’s just a kick in the head.”

The losses amount to 1,500 to 2,500 dollars per head.

Milk production in central California is also down. Tulare-based Land O’ Lakes Creamery normally produces 1.6 million gallons (6.0 million liters) of milk daily. The company has been reporting losses of 400,000 gallons (1.1 million liters) a day, according to Zylstra.

[Dairy cows are showered with water]
Disposal of the cattle creates another economic drain on strapped dairy farmers, and the sheer numbers of carcasses heading to the rendering plants has forced some counties to declare a state of emergency. Normally outlawed as a disposal method in California, many of the dead cattle are buried in landfills or composted on site.

unbelievable….

Google Products Categories - Checkout

July 15th, 2006 by Dave

maybe it’s just me but i serious don’t see what the hell the new Google Checkout has to do with Search. don’t get me wrong… i’m a Google Products fanatic but listing it under the Search category really doesn’t make sense. they might want to make up a new category like “Tools” because when Google Reader comes out of labs they’ll need a resting spot for it also.

just my “3″ cents…

Microsoft Lays to Rest Windows 98

July 11th, 2006 by Dave

so if you’re still using clunky Windows 98 on your old beater and using it to surf the net, i recommend you switch to a different Operating System. i personally recommend switching to a form of Linux like Ubuntu. it’s easy to install and it can be a great learning experience that comes with a whole community of support.

Microsoft shuts down Windows 98

Microsoft is urging an estimated 70 million users of Windows 98 to upgrade as it ends support for the software.

From 11 July, Microsoft will no longer help users over the phone with any problems they have with the ageing operating system.

The firm will also stop providing security updates for Windows 98 from the same date.

Support for the software was originally due to end in 2003, but was extended following customer protests.
